Abstract
Background: The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the degree of knowledge and practice related to hypertension differs between controlled and uncontrolled groups divided by blood pressure and to search for an efficient program for hypertension management.

Methods: Among 3,787 hypertension patients registered Kong ju city public health center, 454 patients were investigated. The blood pressure of the subjects was taken by community health practitioner. Questionnaire composed of 40 items was administered. 16 of items are about subjects¡¯ knowledge of hypertension and 24 items are for the practice of hypertension management. In order to find out the characteristics of the groups, the data collected was compared and analyzed by dividing two groups according to blood pressure.

Results: 1) Among 454 hypertension patients, 155(34.1%) patients maintain their blood pressure normal and 299(65.8%) patient do not.
2) There were statistically significant differences in dietary habits between the two groups. Controlled group take less
animal fat(p<.05), less salty food(p<.05), less cholesterol contained food(p<.05) compared to uncontrolled group.
3) There were statistically significant differences in knowledge and practice of hypertension between the two groups.
Controlled grouphas higher degree of knowledge of hypertension(p<.01) and practice(p<.05).
4) Correlation between knowledge of hypertension and practice shows very weak positive relation(r=.208, p<.001) in female subjects.

Conclusions: Average age of the patients were over sixty(82.2%). It is necessary to educate patients continually through instructional program in order them to be able to manage their blood pressure, do regular exercise, and change their living habits. Regular check up of blood pressure is needed. A stricter blood pressure management program should be administered for male hypertension patients.
